چکیده

Background The management of iron overload has been transformed by the use of T2* as a surrogate marker of cardiac iron loading. The presence of iron however not only changes T2*, but also T2 and T1. Recent advances make T1 mapping a possible complementary technique to T2*. Preliminary data are encouraging, but the relative advantages and disadvantages and optimal mathematical model for the relationship between T1 and T2* remain unknown.

Evaluation of tissue doppler echocardiography and T2* magnetic resonance imaging in iron load of patients with thalassemia major

Background: Iron-mediated cardiomyopathy is the main complication of thalassemia major (TM) patients. Therefore, there is an important clinical need in the early diagnosis and risk stratification of patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of tissue doppler imaging (TDI) to study cardiac iron overload in patients with TM using T2* magnetic resonance (MR) as the gold-standard...

Heterogeneity in myocardial iron content in pediatric and young adult patients

Background Non-invasive quantification of myocardial iron content in patients with chronic anemia by Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) using T2* imaging sequences has significantly improved their clinical care. Measurement of myocardial iron content is traditionally performed on the interventricular septum of a single, mid-ventricular short axis image. Limited data exists to evaluate the reprodu...

Comparison of iron chelation effects of deferoxamine, deferasirox, and combination of deferoxamine and deferiprone on liver and cardiac T2* MRI in thalassemia maior

Background: Cardiac complications due to iron overload are the most common cause of death in patients with thalassemia major. The aim of this study was to compare iron chelation effects of deferoxamine, deferasirox, and combination of deferoxamine and deferiprone on cardiac and liver iron load measured by T2* MRI. Methods: In this study, 108 patients with thalassemia major aged over 10 years...

Myocardial iron quantification using modified Look-Locker inversion recovery (MOLLI) T1 mapping at 3 Tesla

Background Quantification of myocardial iron overload is critical for the management of patients with hemochromatosis. The effects of excess iron on T1 and T2* relaxation times correlate directly with tissue iron concentration. T2* became the clinical standard at 1.5T as it can be easily obtained in a fast one breath-hold ECG gated multi-echo GRE sequence. At 3T, however, T2* quantification can...

R2* for myocardial iron quantification at 3T CMR using an advanced shimming algorithm

Background Quantification of myocardial iron overload is critical for the management of patients with hemochromatosis. T2* relaxation time or its inverse R2*, are currently the noninvasive gold standard at 1.5T, as they strongly correlate with myocardial iron concentration, and are obtained using a fast single breath-hold ECG-gated multi-echo GRE sequence. However, due to high sensitivity to B0...
